Library Clerk
Olney Public Library is accepting applications for the position of Library Clerk. This position is part time and under the direction of the Library Director. Library clerks are under the direct supervision of the Library Director in conjunction with the Assistant Librarian and perform a variety of general library work in technical and/or public services to assist patrons in finding information and follow established processes with co-workers in processing and managing library materials.
Job Duties
- Follows the procedures for opening and closing the library
- Provides service at the circulation desk
- Checks materials in and out using computer terminal
- Greets and directs patrons to various locations or locates materials
- Answers phone
- Registers new patrons, pull up their records, collect library charges such a fine for overdue books, damaged or lost books, or user fees via the Polaris integrated library system module
- Shelves books in proper order
- Aids in the preparation of displays, publicity items and other materials
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Library Director or Assistant Librarian

Qualifications
Associate’s Degree from a certified college of high school diploma or GED plus three years working directly with the public
Knowledge Required
- Customer Service and phone answering practices
- Greet guests and provide directional assistance
- Word processing, filing, basic computer skills
- Functions of the Polaris integrated library modules
- Willing to develop a working knowledge of library policies, procedures, and materials
Skills Required
- Listen carefully
- Follow directions accurately
- Ask questions
- Interact well with all age, gender, racially diverse patrons
- Learn how to find information for patrons in a variety of material types in print, audio/visual, electronic databases, and other formats
- Learn how to use eBooks and help patrons load the app onto their electronic devices
Physical Demands
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; repetitive computer keyboard work sometimes required as well as moderate lifting and carrying materials and supplies which may weigh up to 25 pounds; reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities, manual dexterity, clear speech, and visual hearing acuity.
Working Conditions
Office and circulation desk environment; exposure to computer screens/computer lab; workroom with AV equipment, and office machines. On occasion, performance of duties requires travel to another library or system location for meetings and training that require driving or other forms of transportation.
